This volume, the initial tome of Kevin A. Campbell’s multi-volume work documenting the Gettysburg Campaign, examines the roots of the campaign. Campbell also provides details into the character, persona and military bearing of the men who would lead the tired, hungry, and footsore legions, both North and South, to their confrontation in southern Pennsylvania. The harsh existence of these citizen soldiers, most of whom had little to no experience in the art of warfare prior to signing up to fight, is also discussed in this preamble to the campaign. The staunch resolve of these men who fought the greatest battle ever to be waged on the North American continent, would be forged not only during the war, but for some, many years prior to the conflict. This series of informative volumes attempts to weave the tapestry of the campaign from the viewpoints, activities, and decisions of its entire cast. From men at the highest levels of command to those on the battle line, all would play a part in the drama which unfolded in and around the small town of Gettysburg.
